WWII Hero John Seagraves to be Honored by Cub Scouts of America Pack 202
(February 19, 2013)Cary, NC (PRWEB) February 19, 2013
The 86-year old Stewards Mate Second Class (Ret.) John Seagraves served on Battleship North Carolina from May1944 until his honorable discharge after the conclusion of WWII in December 1945. Seagraves will forever be known as the gunner who shot down the kamikaze that narrowly missed the most decorated battleship during the Pacific War, saving hundreds of his shipmates lives and the legacy of the legendary ship. His actions were unparalleled for his time.
Steve Lucovsky, Cubmaster of Pack 202, has organized the event to build character in his 6-10 year old Cub Scouts. His young apprentices learn through the Scout Oath that they have a duty to God and country. Through community service projects, meeting everyday heroes, and activities centered on learning citizenship, Cub Scouts are able to develop and practice their duty.
A veterans service in the military is the ultimate contribution. This ceremony affords our scouts the opportunity to recognize a great American who has served our country with honor and courage, values which are core to the Cub Scout program, says Lucovsky. By honoring men who have made great contributions, he believes their message will shape the boys forever.
Honoring a WWII veteran with a Heros Welcome provides a vehicle for the leaders to pass on, through a special ceremony, life lessons from the Greatest Generation to todays generation. Lucovsky seizes the moment to honor a man who has done so much for Americans. The Cubmaster felt Seagraves offered a rare opportunity to teach the boys about the values needed to persevere through difficult times saying, John Seagraves deserves the highest recognition as a living example of the Scout Law. During the award ceremony, author and son David Seagraves, will also be present to speak with the kids.
John Seagraves story aired on local news stations and in regional papers in May of 2012 when Seagraves son David Seagraves launched Uncommon Hero: The John Seagraves Story, a memoir chronicling his fathers life, particularly the heroics that changed so many lives on April 14, 1945. I never thought of being brave, or risking my life, says Seagraves. We were at war. I just did my job. Of all the gun battles we were in, this day in Okinawa was different. My gun crew buddy saw that one kamikaze come out of nowhere before anyone else did. As soon as we were given the order to fire, I aimed for the propeller and kept shooting until the plane crashed, seeing the faces of the two enemy pilots passing overhead before crashing into the Pacific.
John Seagraves has been passionately dedicated to extraordinary food service for over six decades, currently operating Johns Fine Food outside Atlanta in Forest Park, GA since September 1988. He and his wife Mildred have owned successful restaurant and food service contracts in Boston dating back to 1960, and Atlanta since 1980. John is a Griffin, GA native, who honorably served in the U.S. Navy during WWII before raising a family in the Boston area.
