The debut season of The Orion Music + More Festival was held in 2012 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Inspired by the European music festivals, band members Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo and James Hetfield wanted to give music lovers in the U.S. similar exposure to a wide variety of music genres. They chose the name for this festival from their 1986 hit instrumental from the Master of Puppets album. The large turnout at the first ever Orion Music + More Festival exceeded their expectations and made their endeavor a big success.

This year, the venue is being moved to Detroit and the lineup will include Red Hot Chili Peppers, who will co-headline with the founders Metallica. The Detroit lineup also includes indie-rock band Japandroids, English rock band Foals and EDM (Electronic Dance Music) rave band Bassnectar. Unlike last year, Metallica will be putting up their act on only one of the two days, and they don't plan on playing an entire album like they did at the Orion festival last year.

By inviting bands like Bassnectar, Metallica aims to give rock fans the energetic entertainment that they love. As the name of the festival implies, there is more than just music on offer. Fans can also attend an exhibition of Metallica souvenirs, including personal collectibles belonging to the band members. The Orion Music + More Festival does not follow a fixed format; Metallica prefers to keep it casual and laid-back. The audience can expect an aura of intimacy with the musicians, making everyone present at the festival feel like one big happy family united through the magic of music.
