The PreK-12 Learning Group Announces the 2014 Winners of the REVERE Awards: Recognizing Valuable Educational Resources

The PreK-12 Learning Group of the Association of American Publishers (AAP) is pleased to present the winners of the 2014 REVERE Awards: Recognizing Valuable Educational Resources (http://www.REVEREAwards.org). The REVERE Awards program recognizes exemplary learning materials for both children and adults, and is the most prestigious and comprehensive award program specifically for preK-12 resources.

Formerly known as the AEP Awards program, this annual event was established by the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) and continues a decades-long tradition of honoring excellence across all resources for preK-12 and adult learners, educators, and administrators.

The REVERE competitions include The Golden Lamps, The Innovation Award, Beyond the Classroom, and the Distinguished Achievement Awards. The REVERE Awards Gallery, a new online directory of all finalists, was launched in May to showcase these high-quality learning resources. View the list of winners on the Learning Group website.


The Golden Lamps are the most prestigious awards in the program. For this competition, judges identify products that stand alone as exemplars within each of four categories, transcending media, audience, and subject matter. The 2014 Golden Lamp winners are: A Framework for Understanding Poverty: A Cognitive Approach by aha!Process, Inc. (Professional Development category); The InvestiGator Club PreK with STEAM by Rainbow Concepts (Whole Curriculum category); Scholastic iRead by Scholastic, Inc. (Supplemental Resources category), and Teaching Young Children by The National Association for the Education of Young Children (Periodicals category).

The Beyond the Classroom competition was created to honor exceptional resources typically used outside formal learning environments including books, test prep materials, toys, games, and more. This years winners are: The Next Time You See a Firefly and The Next Time You See a Sunset by the National Science Teachers Association.

The Innovation Awards recognize solutions that use new and innovative approaches to teach and engage leaners. This years Innovation winner is MATH 180 by Scholastic Inc.

In the Distinguished Achievement Awards (DAAs), products compete against each other within a wide range of categories including grade levels, subjects, and entry types. The DAAs are organized into four main categories: Periodicals, Professional Development, Supplemental Resources and Whole Curriculum Program.

The Distinguished Achievement Periodicals winners in the Design category are: Look Out for Harvest Mice in Ranger Rick Jr. and Fox for All Seasons in Ranger Rick, both by the National Wildlife Federation. Winning resources from Teaching Tolerance include The School-to-Prison Pipeline, Fostering Allies and When Bad Things Happen. Scholastic Inc. received awards in the Design category for: Robot Zoo in Scholastic SuperScience; Fish Heads for Lunch? in Junior Scholastic; Get Busy with Some Great Books in Scholastic StoryWorks; Catching the Killer Tigers in Scholastic Action; Inside the Ice in Scholastic News - Edition 2; Tougher than the Taliban in New York Times Upfront; and Slimed! in Scholastic Science Spin.

The Distinguished Achievement Periodicals winners in the Editorial category are: Perspectives in Educational Leadership by ASCD; That's Wild in Ranger Rick Jr. by National Wildlife Federation; Get Connected in Science and Children by the National Science Teachers Association; The American Dream: Slipping Away? by ASCD; and Mind Boggling in Prism by the American Society for Engineering Education. Scholastic Inc. received awards in the Editorial category for Cool Science Jobs in SuperScience; News+Notes in Scholastic ART; The Magical World of Isaac in Scholastic Storyworks; Funny Business in Junior Scholastic; Keeping Up with Bear Cubs in Scholastic News 2; Boston Bombing Coverage in Scholastic News Online; Sisters in Arms in the New York Times Upfront; and The Hunt for the Giant Squid in Scholastic News 2.

The Distinguished Achievement Periodicals winners in the Whole Publication category are: Tackling Informational Text in Educational Leadership by ASCD; Teaching Young Children; and, from Scholastic Inc., the winners are Earth Day in Scholastic DynaMath; Portrait Art Today: Spotlight on Kehinde Wiley in Scholastic ART; and Earth Day Power! in Scholastic News 2.

The Periodical of the Year Awards were presented to Teaching Young Children by the National Association for the Education of Young Children; Represent: The Voice of Youth in Care by Youth Communication; and Ranger Rick and Ranger Rick Jr. by the National Wildlife Federation.

The Distinguished Achievement Professional Development winners are: Uncovering Student Ideas in Primary Science, Volume 1 by the National Science Teachers Association; Depth of Knowledge (DOK) Revised Bloom's Taxonomy (RBT) Wheel by Mentoring Minds; and Never Underestimate Your Teachers by ASCD.

The Distinguished Achievement Supplemental Resources winners are: Independent Reading Assessment: Nonfiction by Scholastic Inc.; Little Discoverers: Big Fun with Science, Math, and More! by Sesame Workshop; Inquiring Scientists, Inquiring Readers by the National Science Teachers Association; Relationship Smarts PLUS 3.0 Relationships & Romance for Teens by the Dibble Institute; ExploreLearning Gizmos by ExploreLearning; ReadWorks by ReadWorks; NBC Learn K-12 by NBC News; Raz-Kids by Learning A-Z; Science World by Scholastic Inc.; and The Constitution Project: The Right to Remain Silent by the Documentary Group.

Distinguished Achievement Whole Curriculum Program winners are: The InvestiGator Club PreK with STEAM by Rainbow Concepts; MATH 180 by Scholastic Inc.; StudySync by StudySync A McGraw-Hill Education Partner; and STEMscopes by Accelerate Learning.

Judges Awards were also presented to several products: Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration by Sesame Workshop; Emotional ABC's by Emotional ABCs; and The Book of Trends in Education 2013/14 by Young Digital Planet.

The entries are subject to a rigorous judging process consisting of three rounds of review by teachers and leading experts throughout the industry. Three key principles--quality content, age appropriateness, and innovation--drive the judging criteria and evaluation process. View the quality benchmarks established by the Learning Group.

The winners were announced at the REVERE Awards Gala on June 4 at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC. Maureen Costello from The Southern Poverty Law Center and Ira Wolfman from POE Communications presented the awards to the 22 winning organizations. The Gala event was sponsored by Microsoft.
