Stanley Tomchin Possibly the World's Best Backgammon Player(July 21, 2014)
LAS VEGAS, NV -- (Marketwired) -- 07/21/14 -- With the ongoing changes in the regulation of online gaming across the United States, more and more traditional casino games can now be played online, from poker to black jack, from craps to roulette. While web surfers are excited about the easy and comfortable access to games, the availability around the clock and the effortlessness with which they can find other players for a nice game of cards, it is easy to forget that most of these game have a long history and tradition that often go back for centuries and that they were actually invented for people to come together and socialize over a nice game.
Backgammon, for example is one of the oldest board games for two people there is. It originated in Persia more than five thousand years ago and was created in response to chess, which was brought to Persia by Indians. A little known fact even amongst passionate backgammon players is that the board is actually supposed to represent the planet earth and the checkers symbolize people moving along the planet according to their fate. Another rather unknown fact is that Hugh Hefner, the famous founder of Playboy magazine, is an avid backgammon fan and has held many backgammon parties at his Playboy mansion. He even invited major backgammon star Stanley Tomchin to stay with him in Beverly Hills to play his beloved game.
Stanley Tomchin first came across backgammon at a bridge club in New York where he got to watch such great players as Art Dickman and Tobias Stone. "I was the scorekeeper for them," Tomchin remembers. "I would watch them play and that was my training ground." Together with a friend, Paul Magriel, Tomchin would study positions and constantly improve in the game; he even co-authored Magriel's book "Backgammon." "There was no literature on backgammon then. Nobody knew how to play. We came up with theories that would blow people's minds," tells Tomchin. Within only a few years, Tomchin became a hugely successful player and was widely known in the backgammon world. Prince Alexis Obolensky, publisher of "World Backgammon News," even dedicated an article to Tomchin after he won the St. Martin tournament, calling Tomchin "the best backgammon player in the world."
Stanley Tomchin is known as the world's most successful professional games player who is now using his skills and good fortune to support a number of local and international philanthropic causes. Starting out as a chess, bridge and backgammon wiz, he made his career in the gaming industry, which allowed him to leave his home town on Long Island, New York, and travel and work in places all around the world, from London to the Caribbean to Hugh's Playboy Mansion in California. Today, Tomchin is dedicating his life to supporting charities and donating to good causes, helping those who are less fortunate, inspired by his sister Joy Tomchin, who has been an active supporter of charities for more than twenty years.
