Salt Lake Regional Medical Center Surgeon and U.S. Freeskiing Team Physician, Dr. Andrew Cooper, Prepares for Sochi Winter Games

Salt Lake City, Utah (PRWEB) January 24, 2014

Salt Lake Regional Medical Center surgeon and U.S. Freeskiing team physician, Dr. Andrew Cooper is preparing for his role as a leader in the U.S. ski teams medical care while in Sochi, Russia. Dr. Cooper was a surgeon for Sarah Hendrickson, U.S. womens ski jumping team athlete, after she suffered a knee injury during a training session in the summer of 2013. Following Hendrickson from surgical treatment through rehabilitation, Dr. Cooper provided medical clearance for the young athlete to begin jumping again--ultimately earning a spot on the U.S. womens ski jumping team.

It is always difficult to see an athlete sustain an injury, especially when his or her career is jeopardized, said Dr. Cooper. Sarahs situation was unique. For such a young athlete, she not only has the potential to become a medalist, but she also has the opportunity to be on a womens team making Winter Game history. Everyone involved in her treatment and recovery is rooting for her, and Im honored to be part of the medical team traveling to Sochi with these extraordinary athletes.

Dr. Cooper is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center and a founding partner of Comprehensive Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Salt Lake City. His medical focus centers in minimally invasive surgical techniques and athletic rehabilitation. In addition to his U.S. Freeskiing involvement, Dr. Cooper serves as a sports medicine physician at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center, the head team physician for Real Salt Lake Major League Soccer team and Westminster College, and is the medical director of the Sports Med Utah regional sports program.
