Michigan native Linda Stephen is the featured artist at Artworks during the Big Rapids and Ferris State Universitys 5th annual Festival of the Arts January 25 to February 29. Her show Folding the Moment features intricate scenes of paper 3-D sculptures and origami of rural Michigan, the Great Lakes and whimsical scenes from children picking apples to happy skipping with umbrellas in the rain. She will also present a hands-on workshop on Sunday January 29. The opening art reception is Monday January 30.
Stephens 3-D paper art works are part of public and private collections around the world from the JW Marriott Hotel's sister city collection in Grand Rapids, which features six of her works, to the Mayors Office in Omihachiman, Japan.
Sunday January 29, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Stephen will present a public workshop on origami the Japanese art of paper folding. This hands-on demonstration is free and materials will be provided. Participants will create origami for gifts and fun including Valentines Day cards. This is open to beginners and experience folders. Artworks, 106 North Michigan Ave., Big Rapids.
Monday January 30, 7-9 p.m. Opening reception to "The Origami Art Collage of Linda Stephen" Art Exhibition. The exhibit will be open through February 25: Tuesdays-Fridays 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Sundays 1 - 4 p.m. Artworks, 106 North Michigan Ave., Big Rapids.
Participants will also have the opportunity to fold papers for a collaborative public art project Big Rapids: Enfolded by Beauty, an origami art collage, which will later be displayed at Artworks and will honor the joys, large and small, that make Big Rapids and northern Michigan a great place to live.
Stephen will also present origami workshops for area elementary schools, in which she will introduce the Japanese art of paper folding in a program designed for ages seven and up. Children will learn to create simple flower and animal designs, and to fold papers for Stephens collaborative art project.
All programs are hosted in downtown Big Rapids, about 50 miles north of Grand Rapids off of US 131.

About the Artist
Linda Stephen 3-D paper art works are a fusion of Japanese and modern aesthetics and incorporate an array of colors, textures and details. Fluent in Japanese and passionate about Japanese paper, Stephen studied Japanese art through a scholarship from the State of Michigan and the Japan Center for Michigan Universities. She lived and worked in Shiga, Michigans sister state, for seven years.
Her commissioned origami art landscapes are now part of public and private collections in hotels, schools, city halls, opera houses, and corporations. Her commercial art projects range from an animated origami dollar bill commercial for Tobacco Free Nebraska to the JW Marriott Hotels sister city collection in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Stephen holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She received a Bachelor of Arts in French, summa cum laude, with minors in business, mathematics and music from Northern Michigan University, where she was chosen Outstanding Graduate by the Michigan Association of State University Boards and honored as one of the Top 10 graduates in the state by Michigan Woman.
