Apple devices make up five of the top ten most traded-in devices of 2013, according to new research from leading mobile phone and gadget recycling comparison site CompareMyMobile.

The site used data generated by the thousands of consumers trading in old devices with over forty UK recycling vendors listed on the site in 2013, to put together the end of year gadget trade-in report.

Data collected showed that Apple truly dominated the list of top traded-in devices in both the mobile phone and tablet categories.

Top Traded-in Mobile Phones

1.    Apple iPhone 4 16GB: 8.94 percent*
2.    Samsung Galaxy S3: 5.88 percent*
3.    Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100: 5.12 percent*
4.    Apple iPhone 4S 16GB: 4.65 percent*
5.    Apple iPhone 5 16GB: 3.95 percent*

Samsung vs. Apple

Samsungs Galaxy S3 almost reached the same average trade-in market share as Apples iPhone 4 16GB in Q4 2013, making up an average of 8.75 percent of all mobile phone trade-ins compared to the iPhone 4 16GBs 9.82 percent average share (see full break down of average trade-in share by quarters in attached documentation).

Apples domination of the mobile trade-in market resulted in the brand making up a total of 28.9 percent of all mobile trade-ins on the site in 2013, followed by Samsung which made up an average of 17.95 percent and BlackBerry with 15.3 percent.

Similarly to the mobile phone trade-in market, Apple also dominated the tablet PC trade-in market, with eight of the ten top traded-in tablet PCs manufactured by Apple.

1.    Apple iPad 2 Wi-Fi 16GB: 9.3 percent*
2.    Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1: 6.05 percent*
3.    Apple iPad 3 Wi-Fi 16GB: 5.14 percent*
4.    Apple iPad Mini Wi-Fi 16GB: 5.14 percent*
5.    Apple iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G 16GB: 5.03 percent*

Samsung vs. Apple again

Similarly to the mobile trade-in market information, a Samsung device did almost compete to become the top traded-in tablet in Q3. Samsungs Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 made up 9.36 percent of all tablet PC trade-ins in Q3 2013, compared to the iPad 2 Wi-Fi 16GBs 9.4 percent share.

Apples dominance of the tablet PC market is even more evident when you look at the brands overall share of tablet trade-ins in 2013 the brand made up an average of 74.16 percent (see the full break down of brand trade-in market share in the attached documentation). Apple was also the most valuable tablet PC brand of 2013.

Samsung did lead the Android mobile phone trade-in market though making up six out of the top ten traded-in Android phones on CompareMyMobile, with HTC devices making up the other four.

Device Depreciation 2013-2014

The Mobile and Tablet Trade-in Market Report 2013-2014 shows that BlackBerrys Z10 was the mobile phone which lost the most value throughout the year losing 215 GBP of its value between January and December.

Samsungs Galaxy S4 and Apples iPhone 5 were also in the top five devices losing value most quickly, losing 161 GBP and 145 GBP in the same year as they were released.

Apples iPad 4 Wi-Fi + 4G 64GB was the tablet PC which lost value most quickly, losing 273.95 GBP throughout the year.
