LJCC and HoliVision Announce iStand Falls Prevention® Class Scheduled for September 20(September 12, 2013)
Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) September 12, 2013
The LJCC of Birmingham will host its 2nd annual iStand Falls Prevention® class on Friday, September 20, from 10-10:30 AM (CDT) at the LJCC facility located at 3960 Montclair Road. The class is free but registration is recommended; signup is available at http://www.istandfit.com. The first five registered attendees will receive a free iStand DVD.
iStand is an innovative, interactive program that provides evidenced-based exercise routines to help minimize the risk of falls for seniors, stroke victims, and employees. It teaches simple activities and movements modeled on two of the most recommended exercise programs in the world - Tai Chai and the Otago Exercise Program (OEP) - that seniors can do to improve balance, strength, and awareness; all of which help minimize the risk of falls.
Falls among seniors is at epidemic levels and is a leading cause of death and injury, says Mazy Holiday, creator of iStand, and founder and CEO of HoliVision. We encourage area seniors to join us for this class and begin a very effective first step to minimize their risk for falls, especially in recognition of Falls Prevention Awareness Day on September 22.
One out of three seniors over age 65 falls each year according to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Falls are the number one cause of death from injury among this age group. The death rate from falls among seniors has risen sharply over the past decade and is expected to grow as the population ages. Every day 10,000 people in the US turn 65 and that trend will continue for the next 19 years, according to the CDC.
The iStand program is also available in a mobile app format, the first of its kind for a worldwide falls prevention program. The iStand mobile app - available for download from iTunes - is the first of its kind for a worldwide falls prevention program. Even seniors who are frail will benefit from the stretching and movements as long as they have a caretaker with them.
HoliVision has also just announced a partnership with Cranium Crunches, an online brain training site that helps people work on cognitive abilities like attention, memory and executive functioning using mind games and puzzles. The iStand Falls Prevention and Cranium Crunches partnership offers a natural complement to the mind-body connection that is important for overall health and wellness especially as people age, and is designed to help seniors stay mentally and physically fit for active aging as long as possible with easy-to-use online programs one targeting falls prevention and the other targeting mental acuity.
The iStand program also hosts an online social community called HIP (Help. Interact. Prevent.) that allows seniors to engage with each other and with their physical therapists online. By logging on to http://www.istandfit.com seniors can report falls to their physical therapist and discuss their exercise routines and other healthy activities with each other. The iStand app recently received a thumbs up review and recommendation from The Senior List, a community-driven, online portal focused on linking families to quality products and seniors services.
In addition to iStand, Ms. Holiday developed the cushioning technology and holds patents for The SupportSafe Walking Cane® and The SupportSafe Walker®.
