GMHC Is Grateful for Support by Philanthropist Stanley Tomchin

(May 26, 2014)

SANTA BARBARA, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/26/14 -- On May 18, 2014 tens of thousands of supporters marched the streets of Manhattan once again on the occasion of AIDS Walk New York. Now in its 29th year, AIDS Walk New York is the biggest AIDS fundraising event in the world. Every year, around 45,000 people come together in Central Park to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS and each year approximately $5.5 million is raised to sponsor the fight against AIDS. The event is organized by GMHC, short for Gay Men's Health Crisis, an AIDS service organization that was founded in 1981. Since then it has been relentlessly fighting ignorance, prejudice and fear that people suffering from HIV/AIDS have to face on a daily basis.

One rather famous supporter, and former board president, of GMHC is Joy A. Tomchin, producer of the documentary "How to Survive a Plague," for which she received an Academy Award nomination. At the fifth annual culinary gala SAVOR, which was hosted by GMHC and Emmy and Tony Award-winning "Sex and the City" star Cynthia Nixon at Cipriani in midtown Manhattan, Joy received the Judith Peabody Humanitarian Award for her outstanding advocacy work. In her acceptance speech she did not only thank Larry Kramer, founder of GMHC, but also her brother Stanley Tomchin: "My older brother, Stan, who is one of my closest friends. Stan, you were the first person in my life to let me know that it's okay for me to be gay, to be who I am. But it wasn't just the words, you have always supported me and the LGBT community in everything you have done."

Stanley Tomchin, once a world-renowned professional games player, who started his career as a chess, bridge and backgammon wiz, and represented the United States in the bridge Olympiad, has been a passionate philanthropist for many years and reveals that it was actually his sister Joy who inspired him to put his skills to good use and help to "spread Joy around the world." Stanley is very engaged in supporting Joy and her efforts for GMHC. GMHC always acts true to its motto "Fight AIDS. Love Life." and develops comprehensive solutions that promote education, foster awareness and improve care. At the same time the organization points out the importance of building strong and supportive communities, which provide people that are affected by HIV/AIDS with a network they can turn to. On top of the many community-based charities that Stanley Tomchin supports in Santa Barbara and Las Vegas, he is also actively involved in supporting international organizations such as the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Greenpeace. Stan firmly believes in giving back and genuinely enjoys sharing his good luck with others, who are less fortunate than him.
