Custom Chess Manufacturer, The House of Staunton, Shares Tips on Working with The Clock

  (September 14, 2017)

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Sept. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Wood chess board manufacturer, The House of Staunton, helps players learn how to play chess using a clock.

Chess clocks began appearing in tournament play at the London 1883 chess tournament. The clock's purpose is to track the amount of time players take to make a move. This prevents players from excessively delaying the game. For those new to the use of clocks in tournament play, The House of Staunton shares a few tips:

  1. Know the time controls. Before beginning a game, you should know how much time you have to make a move. Doing a little research on how the clock works in chess is a smart idea for all new players.
  2. Handle the clock with care. Picking up the clock and pressing the button too forcefully can cause you to forfeit the game. While live chess play can be stressful, it is imperative that players maintain their mental composure.
  3. Press the clock firmly but quickly. Letting your finger or hand hover over the clock button is against the rules. Always use the same hand to press the clock button and remove your hand immediately after you've pressed the button.
  4. Keep track of your opponent's time. Each player is responsible for stating whether their opponent has lost time. Be sure to keep an eye on your opponent's clock as well as your own.

Once players become comfortable using the clock and know how to use it, they must learn the notion of time control. Time control is how each round of the chess match is able to finish in a timely manner. Typically, players have 90 minutes for the first 40 moves and 30 minutes for the rest of the game. There are a variety of types of time control. For example, there is the Fischer, Bronstein Delay, Simple Delay, Overtime Penalty, and Hourglass. Players should familiarize themselves with these five types of time controls.
