Curtis Debord, Teacher, Receives Annual 'Teacher of the Year' Award for Excellence in Teaching(April 04, 2014)
Green Bay, Wisconsin (PRWEB) April 04, 2014
"In recognizing Curtis for this prestigious award, I am reminded of his great dedication to his students. Curtis works tirelessly to engage and to encourage his students with creative tasks that impact their desire to learn. His infectious attitude and award-winning lessons have enabled generations of students lucky enough to have spent time in his classroom with a life-long love of learning, which has led many of them to become high school teachers themselves. Young people today in this world deserve teachers like Curtis who put the needs of their students first," Haines said.
Debord has taught at Silver Rock High School for the past twenty-five years as both an English and Mathematics instructor and sometimes principal. Debord earned his bachelor's degree in secondary education from Shippensburg University in PA, a master's degree in English from Marquette, and a master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. He is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
As a frequent presenter at NCTE and NCTM conferences, Debord has shared his innovative lessons and strategies, which have included the use of Java-scripted math learning games, website design, Skype, and movie making, with countless other teachers who have been swift to apply these engaging and critical thinking lesson plans to the classroom to benefit students across the country.
Upon reception of the Award, Debord said, "I am honored and extremely humbled to be recognized by the National Council of High School Teachers. Receiving this award means a great deal to me, for it once more gave me time to reflect upon those former teachers, like Mr. Wesley and Ms. Jenkins, who took time out of their day when I was a brash teenager and helped me get my head on straight. Without their inspiration and committed to me, I wouldn't be here today."
In addition to earning The National Council of High School Teachers of the Year Award, Debord is the recipient of the 2014 Wisconsin PTA Teacher of the Year, and won a Kohl Wisconsin Fellowship in December of 2013.
The National Teacher of the Year has been awarded annually since 1940 by The National Council of High School Teachers to recognize the best in teaching strategies and success. Unlike other awards, NCHST reviews, researches, and identifies a short list of twenty candidates each year before narrowing that list to five finalists whom they then visit and observe unannounced in the classroom. As part of the process, interviews get conducted with current and former students and the teacher.
