Walker, who has created crossword for magazines such as Essence and Ebony, was tapped by the 2009 inauguration planners to provide family puzzles for inclusion in the gift bags for the Childrens Inaugural Ball and the Illinois State Ball. Having lived just blocks from the Obamas in Hyde Park and shared membership in Chicagos Black Women Lawyers Association with Michelle, Walker is a longtime Obama fan. In my experience, she said, Barack Obama is the sharpest person in any room hes in. Its been an incredible joy to witness his rise to the presidency and the successes he has forged while in office.
The Obama crossword has been a hit with solvers of all ages. Eighth grade teacher Koai Matthews noted that the puzzle was enjoyable, not only for him, but also for his students at a University of Chicago charter school. The puzzle about Obama makes me look forward to more activities like this that highlight the achievements of African-Americans, he said. According to Earl Carter, an 85-year-old, retired owner of a dry cleaner in Highland, Indiana, I've never been a big crossword fan, but the Obama puzzle was so much fun and so satisfying to solve about a subject you enjoy and discover that you know the answers.
Posted on Inauguration Day, the puzzle offers the websites fans a preview of its Excellence in Black puzzle series. The series, which will debut in February in honor of Black History Month, will provide a new puzzle each week, exploring the life of a prominent African-American in entertainment, sports or politics.
