Back to Basics Education Company is So Confident in the Basics That They Guarantee an Increase in Student Math Grades(June 13, 2014)
Wilmington, DE (PRWEB) June 13, 2014
For a limited time - until the end of June, users who pre-register for Noventa Learning's upcoming Back to Basics math app will get a 100% guarantee that their math grades will improve. The only catch? The guarantee only applies if the student using it does "off season training" - that is, doing about 15 minutes of daily practice over the summer break.
Co-founder and CEO Jon Lam explains: "Research has shown that the summer break results in a significant loss of math skill. This, combined with our own research into traditional math fundamentals, makes us confident that the average student will see a 5-10% jump in their math grade simply by using our app for 15 minutes a day."
Back to Basics is purely focused on drilling arithmetic and algebra. The focus is to get students to fully master these concepts - meaning that they have 90% plus accuracy under time pressure.
Drills? But doesn't that fly in the face of the new education paradigms like Common Core?
"We like to apply a common-sense sports-like methodology to our apps. If I was coaching soccer, Id rather have a kid practice one type of shot until they can execute it under pressure. Then Id move on to a different kind of shot, said co-founder Tiffany Lee. A lot of what were seeing today is that kids are taught 10 different ways to 'shoot the ball' so to speak, and yet, they arent practicing any one of those enough to master the technique.
"That really creates problems once they get to higher levels - how can you learn high school trigonometry if youre not sure about your middle school algebra, or elementary multiplication?" added Lam.
The Back to Basics app is, in contrast, a return to what school systems have done for decades, and what the top performing countries in math continue to do - ensure that students master the fundamentals of math through focused repetition. The idea being that there arent shortcuts to making a better soccer player, violinist, or math student. One has to put in the work if they want to be proficient.
